Central Ubud
The streets around Jl. Hanoman and Jl. Goutama, between Jl. Raya Ubud and Monkey Forest Road, put you within walking distance of most restaurants, cafés, shops and the palace. It's the easiest choice for a first visit or a short stay without a scooter. Restaurants on our list here include Kusi and Warung Biah Biah.
The downside is traffic and noise. Pick a guesthouse set back from the main road, down a lane or behind a family compound, and you get the convenience with far more calm.
Penestanan
West of the centre, across the river, Penestanan is a village of lanes and rice fields reached partly by a long staircase. It's quieter, greener and has a strong long-stay community, with yoga studios, cafés and villas among the paddies. You can walk to central Ubud, but it's a real walk; many people use a scooter or rides in the evening.
Sayan and Kedewatan
Further west, along the ridge above the Ayung River, Sayan and Kedewatan are known for villas and hotels with views over the river valley and jungle. It's beautiful and peaceful — the trade-off is that you'll need a ride for most meals and outings. The Sanggingan road, with Bali Jip and Naughty Nuri's, is the nearest restaurant strip.
Tegallalang area
North of town, the Tegallalang zone is beautifully green, with the iconic rice terraces nearby and plenty of villas looking over paddies. It's fairly far from the centre, though, so it's a better fit if you want quiet and don't mind driving in for dinner. It's also a convenient base for trips to Gunung Kawi and the Tampaksiring temples.
Nyuh Kuning and the south
Just south of the Monkey Forest, Nyuh Kuning is a small, tidy village with a calm feel, still within walking or short riding distance of the centre. Areas further south and east, such as Peliatan, have a more local feel and are known for traditional dance and craft.
