Best Time to Visit Ubud: Month by Month (2026)
The best time to visit Ubud is May to September, during Bali’s dry season. Skies are clearer, jungle trails are easier, and evenings stay mild. May, June and September strike the best balance of good weather and fewer crowds.
Dry season vs wet season
Bali has two seasons rather than four. The dry season runs roughly from April or May to September or October; the wet season from about November to March, with the heaviest rain usually between December and February.
Ubud sits in the hills, so it is a little cooler and greener than the beaches in the south, and it gets more rain. In the wet season that usually means heavy afternoon or evening downpours rather than all-day rain; mornings are often clear.
Month by month
| Months | Weather | Crowds | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| January–February | Wettest months; heavy downpours, high humidity | Low, except around New Year | Fine if you're flexible; day trips can be washed out |
| March | Rain easing; still humid | Low | Good value; check the date of Nyepi |
| April | Transition month; more sun | Moderate | Good, green landscapes |
| May–June | Dry, clear, comfortable | Moderate | One of the best windows |
| July–August | Dry, clear, coolest evenings | Highest of the year | Great weather, book ahead |
| September | Dry, clear | Moderate | One of the best windows |
| October | Mostly dry, rain returning late | Moderate | Good, slightly more humid |
| November–December | Wet season begins; afternoon storms | Low, then very high over Christmas | Quiet in November; busy late December |
What the wet season is really like
Travelling to Ubud in the wet season is perfectly reasonable. The rice fields are at their greenest, prices for accommodation are often lower, and the town is calmer. The trade-offs:
- Afternoon storms can stop outdoor plans for a few hours. Plan walks, temples and waterfalls for the morning.
- Trails, temple steps and waterfall paths are slippery. Good shoes matter more than usual.
- Highland trips such as Munduk and Ulun Danu Beratan are more likely to be in cloud.
- Scooter riding in heavy rain is genuinely risky; a driver is the safer choice. See getting around Ubud.
Dates to plan around
- Nyepi (Day of Silence). Bali's new year, usually in March. For 24 hours the whole island stops: no traffic, no lights, no going out, and the airport closes. It's a remarkable experience if you're already there, but don't plan to arrive or leave that day. The date changes each year with the Balinese calendar.
- Galungan and Kuningan. Major ceremonies that come round roughly every 210 days. Streets fill with tall bamboo penjor decorations and temples are busy — a beautiful time to visit, though some local businesses close for a few days.
- School holidays. July–August and late December bring the biggest crowds and highest prices. Book accommodation and drivers early.
Our recommendation
If you can choose, go in May, June or September. If you can only travel in July or August, book early and start each day early to avoid the crowds. If you're coming in the wet season, plan mornings outdoors and keep afternoons flexible.
