Munduk: Waterfalls, Lakes and Coffee Country from Ubud (2026 Guide)

Munduk is a cluster of mountain villages in Bali’s northern highlands, surrounded by clove and coffee plantations, crater lakes and some of the island’s prettiest waterfalls. It is about two hours north of Ubud and noticeably cooler.

Why go

Munduk feels like a different island from Ubud. The village sits on a ridge high in the mountains, the air is cool, and the hillsides are covered with clove trees, coffee, and patches of forest. On the way you pass the crater lakes of Buyan and Tamblingan, two of the most peaceful spots in Bali.

The main draw is the waterfalls. Melanting and Munduk falls are both reached by short forest walks from the road, and there are several more in the surrounding valleys. None of them are as crowded as the waterfalls around Ubud.

Getting there

Allow about two hours each way from Ubud. The road goes north through Bedugul, past Ulun Danu Beratan Temple on Lake Beratan, then along the ridge above the twin lakes. The final section is narrow and winding.

A private driver is the practical choice for a day trip. Only experienced riders should take a scooter: the mountain roads are steep, often wet, and cloud can reduce visibility.

What to do

  • Melanting and Munduk waterfalls. Each is a short, steep walk down from the road on paths and steps; allow 30–60 minutes per waterfall including the walk back up. A small entry fee is collected at each trailhead.
  • Lake Tamblingan. The quieter of the twin lakes, with forest down to the shore and old temples along the edge. Local guides offer canoe trips and walks.
  • The twin lakes viewpoint. The ridge road above Buyan and Tamblingan has wide views over both lakes on a clear day.
  • Coffee and clove plantations. Walk the village paths or ask your guesthouse about a plantation walk.

Day trip or overnight?

Four hours in the car for an afternoon of cloud is the most common Munduk disappointment. As a day trip it works if you leave Ubud very early and keep the plan short: Ulun Danu Beratan, one or two waterfalls, the lakes. Better, stay one or two nights in Munduk and walk the waterfalls in the morning light.

Tips

  • Wear proper shoes. Waterfall paths are steep and slippery, especially in the wet season.
  • Pack a warm layer and a rain jacket; temperatures drop sharply in the evening.
  • Bring cash for trailhead fees, parking and warungs. See how much cash to carry.
  • Be selective with the paid swings and photo platforms along the road. Most are skippable.

Combine with

Munduk combines naturally with Ulun Danu Beratan, the lakeside temple at Bedugul, which is on the way. For a contrasting rural trip in the opposite direction, see Sidemen Valley. Planning around the weather? Read best time to visit Ubud.
